Men's Far Westerns - Day 1

The first day of the 2012 UC Davis Men's Far Westerns Tournament has been completed. Sac I had the best 1st day of Far Westerns in recent memory.  The Hornet men played their 5 team pool in the PM wave and swept through their first 3 matches.  The final match of the day was against the pools top seed and #12 NCVF ranked UC San Diego.

Sac I split the first 2 sets, winning the 1st and losing the 2nd which forced a deciding 3rd set.   In the 3rd set, from the start, the Hornets played from behind.  Going what seemed like point for point, the Sac I was able to keep the score close, but could never take the lead.  At the change over, UC San Diego led 8-6 and late in the set, the Hornets still never had a lead.

As I haven't seen the video, my recolection of the final services of points may be off slightly, but UC San Diego served for match point at 14-12 but opened the door with a missed serve.  With the score 13-14, up to the service line came Freshman Opposite, John Fluette. His serve is played up and attacked by UC San Deigo, but the Hornets dig the ball and Fluette gets a kill out of the back row in transition to tie the set at 14 all. Fluette promptly serves an ace for the Hornets 1st lead of the set at 15-14 as well as earn a match point.   With another tough serve, UC San Diego keeps the ball in play, sets to the outside and the attack is blocked by Drew Wilson and Sam Hochwald to complete the upset #12 UC San Diego.

This was an important win in the tournament to take the pool. Had the Hornets lost the match to UC San Diego, and placed 2nd in pool as seeded, their power pool opponents Sunday morning would have consisted of #10 UC Davis and #14 Cal Poly.  Sac I continues tournament play in  the UC Davis Pavillion at 8AM Sunday morning and will attempt to earn a spot in the gold bracket!

Sac II is also competing in the Far Westerns Tournament, but had a rough day.  They also played in a 5 team pool and finished 1-3 in pool play.  The good news is that Sac II kept their tournament seed.  Tomorrow, Sac II will play their power pool to attempt to earn a spot in the silver bracket.
