NIRSA Results:
Power pools were completed Friday, brackets were filled and single elimination played out throughout Saturday.
The Hornet men competed in their Power Pool first and needed to win both matches in order to advance into Saturday's Silver bracket. The first power pool match was against Northern Illinois. The Hornets split the first two games and lost 10-15 in the deciding third game. Sac State then swept UC Santa Barbara. As the Hornet men went 1-1 in their power pool, they advanced to Saturday's Bronze bracket to compete for 33rd place.
When the Hornet women competed in their respective Power Pool, they needed to win at least one of their two matches in oder to advance into Saturday's Gold bracket. First up was Miami of Ohio B. In 2007, the Hornet women were swept by Miami OH B in pool play. This year, the Hornet women were again defeated by Miami OH B, but by a score of 12-15 in the third game. Sac State also played Georgetown in 2007 and defeated the Hoyas in 3 games during single elimination play. This year, both teams were defeated by Miami OH B and needed the win to qualify for the Gold bracket. Due to close competition, the Sac State - Georgetown match happend to also be the final match to start Friday night. The Hornet women played with determination and swept the Hoyas to earn their first ever appearance in a NIRSA Gold bracket.
Saturday is the day that NIRSA participants play until you lose or win it all. The men again were the first Hornets to compete Saturday. The Hornet men went up against Northeastern in this 1st round of single elimination play. Again the men split the first two games and had to go to a final 3rd game to decide the match. Sac State lost the final game 12-15 and were eliminated from the tournament. The women's 1st round match was against Toledo. The Hornet women could not get into any kind of rythm and were swept.
The 2008 NIRSA National Tournament set a few records for Sacrament State Club Volleyball. The Hornet women advanced into a Gold bracket for the first time and finished a program best, 9th place. Unfortunately, the Hornet men finished a dissappointing 41st place. The national tournament ends this year's Collegiate Club Volleyball season. Next year's national tournament will again head back to Kansas City, MO between April 9-11, 2009.

NIRSA Update:
After an extrememly long day of travel, both teams finally arrived in Dallas, TX for this year's NIRSA Collegiate Club National Tournament late Wednesday night. Yesterday, April 10, both teams competed in their respective pools.
The men's DI pool was part of the morning wave against #3 Central Florida, #22 San Diego State and Kent State. The Hornet men entered the national tournament seeded #27 of 48. The men played hard against #3 Central Florida but eventually fell in the 3rd and deciding game 13-15. The men's second match was against #22 San Diego State, whom they played against in this year's Far Western's Tournament in February. Although the men played much better in this match than earlier in the year, the men fell to San Diego State and 0-2 for the day. The final match of the day had the men playing to hold on to their seed as they faced Kent State. Determined to end the day with a win, the men swept Kent State and ended pool play with a 2-1 record and a challenge match Friday morning to attemt to earn a spot in the Championship flight power pools.
The Hornet women were placed in this year's Divsion II field and seeded #8 out of 48 teams. Their pool was in the afternoon wave and the Hornet women opened up the tournament with a match against Townson. The Sac State women earned a 2-0 sweep of Townson then did it again in their next match against Georgia Southern. The Hornet women's final match of the night was to hold on to their top seed and immediatly earn a spot in a Championship Flight power pool. To do this, the Hornets had to play against Syracuse. The match was a roller coaster through the first two games as each team won a game. The deciding 3rd game was a dogfight until the end with Sac State playing well, but serving errors late led to the Hornets losing 17-19. Although the Hornets ended pool play with a 2-1 record, the other pool play matches caused a 3 way tie for the pools 1st place. The Hornets two wins by 2-0 sweeps helped out in the tie breakers and Sac State held their #8 seed and a spot in a Championship Power pool.
Friday morning, the Hornet men's challenge match was against SUNY Buffalo. The match was tough throughout with a miscommunication at the end of the 1st game costing the Hornets, losing 23-25. The 2nd game again was hard fought, but the Hornets cut out their mistakes from the previous game and won the still close game, 25-22. This forced the deciding 3rd game to get a spot in the Championship Flight. Buffalo built an small early lead in this final game which the Hornet men could not overcome and eventually lost 9-15. This put the Hornet men into the Consolation Flight and will be playing to win the Silver bracket.
The Hornet men's Power Pool starts at 2:30PM and the men will play against Northern Illinois and UC Santa Barbara. The men must win both matches in order to earn a spot in the Silver bracket. The Hornet women will start their power pool at 5:30PM and will play against Georgetown and Miami of Ohio B. To earn a spot in Saturday's Gold bracket, the Hornet women will need to win at least one of their power pool matches. The Hornet women faced both these teams in last year's tournament with Miami OH-B defeating the Hornets in pool play and Sac State defeating Georgetown in the quarter finals of last year's DII bronze bracket.
